The organic production of cranberries distinguishes itself most of all through the use of compost and natural fertilizers to supply the needs of the plants. Cranberries are plants that are threatened relatively little by natural pests. Note that in Quebec there are few problems with fungal pathogens, which often represent a huge problem in the organic cultivation of other crops. Luckily, we have found that the fungi attacking cranberries in other regions such as the United States, do not enjoy our winters. Thus our Nordic climate gives the advantage for organic cultivation. With regard to other problems faced by organic producers, such as weeds and insects, there are several products and cultivation methods available which are very efficient to hinder these problems.
For these reasons, Quebec is designated the world leader in the organic production of cranberries. Normally in agricultural production we find a ratio of 2-4% that harvest organically. In 2009, Quebec recorded 17 certified organic producers out of a total of 66 producers, representing a ratio of 25%. During the same year, 15% of the total area cultivated with cranberries was organic as was 11% of the total fruit harvested.
